Will Vivint Take Back Their Equipment After Cancellation?

Vivint Security Equipment

When you install a Vivint security system in your home, you can pay for it upfront or agree on a payment plan. After paying for the equipment upfront, it’s 100% yours, and you can do whatever you want with the equipment.

However, the cancellation process can get tricky when you have a payment plan with a remaining balance. When a Vivint system’s equipment is not paid off, and there are no plans to pay for it, they will need to return it.

Vivint has a 30-day return period when the owner can give back the equipment. You can contact Vivint customer support and arrange the shipment of your system. In most cases, Vivint will offer to pay the shipping costs to return the equipment.

Along with sending the equipment back, you can pay the remaining balance on your system if you want to keep it. As we will explore in a future section, you can still use some system components without a monitoring plan.

Can You Cancel Vivint Before Paying Off the Equipment?

You will generally have two options if you want to cancel your Vivint contract before paying for the equipment. The first option is to return the equipment within 30 days, and the second is to pay the remaining balance.

Some owners will attempt to avoid these options and be charged from the credit card on file or sent into debt collection. In some cases, you can also cancel a contract without penalty if the system owner fits into the following categories:

  • Death
  • Bankruptcy
  • Transition to an Assisted Living Home
  • Military Deployment of More than Six Months
  • Military Medical Discharge
  • Military Retirement

This cancellation process isn’t a sure thing and is dependent on the customer service team. They will investigate your circumstances and decide if you fit the criteria for canceling the contract without a fee.

What to Do With Vivint Equipment After Cancellation

Dismounting Security Camera

After you have canceled your Vivint contract and own the equipment, you can sell the security system or use it without monitoring. If you browse a marketplace like eBay, you will find numerous Vivint security systems for sale.

You could also use the equipment without a professional monitoring subscription if you cancel your contract. While the security cameras won’t work without the monitoring plan, you can still utilize the sensors in the home.

Many homeowners who bought a home with Vivint use the equipment without a monitoring plan. While the security system won’t work as intended, you can improve the property’s overall security.

Can You Use Vivint Equipment With Other Companies?

A common thought that past Vivint owners have is if they can use the old equipment with other security companies. While this would be convenient, directly linking most Vivint equipment to another provider’s app is impossible.

Most security system companies make connecting another system to their interface impossible. If you have Vivint equipment, you can pay for monitoring or sell the equipment while you install a new system.

    • Vivint security systems are typically paid off over 36 to 60 months, depending on the financing plan. The monthly payment is based on the total equipment cost, divided by the financing term, often with 0% APR. You can also pay upfront.
